In 2009, USA Hockey introduced a new model for youth hockey player development. The American Development Model (ADM) promotes skill development in a high tempo, fun environment. Games are played across the width of a traditional ice surface to allow the kids greater opportunities to use their skills learned in practices.
In 2010, North Pittsburgh was an early adopter of the ADM model. The program was implemented in place of a portion of our Mite travel hockey program.
In 2011, USA Hockey mandated the use of ADM for all Mite programs across all participating youth hockey associations. North Pittsburgh was ahead of the curve, having already conducted a full season of ADM in the prior year. Our Mite travel program was fully converted to the ADM, and we implemented a second session of ADM for children under 10 with beginner-level skills.
BENEFITS OF ADM:
- MORE PUCK TIME: Smaller spaces mean more opportunity for a player to touch the puck – and ultimately improve their game.
- AGE-APPROPRIATE TRAINING: By shrinking the ice down to their level, kids can get more involved and learn skills quicker and easier.
- INCREASED COMPETITION: A smaller ice surface makes players of all skill levels think and act quicker, resulting in more frequent battles for the puck.
- COST SAVINGS: Because multiple teams share the ice, parents save on ice time costs.
